What is a machine tool? Turning, milling, drilling and grinding are among the most important technologies for machine tool manufacturing. The machine tool is the "mother" of all machines and the basis for e.g. car manufacturing or smart phone production. The set-up of the machine tool can be very complex - from conventional lathe, to CNC machine or machining centre up to a production line with automation unit. The target is to produce complex workpieces with the help of tools. Together with the degree of automation, the use of igus motion plastics also increases. From the energy chain and flexing chainflex cables up to dry-tech bearings, all product groups are used in the machine tool. The future project Industry 4.0 is taking on an ever more concrete shape. Thanks to igus smart plastics, the Machine Tool 4.0 is becoming reality for machine tool manufacturers. The goal is always to reduce costs and improve technology.
Tech up, cost down: with improved e-chains, new approvals and certificates for chainflex cables and particularly quiet hybrid linear bearings.

Your benefits
In hardly any other industry is reliability as important as the automotive industry. Whole vehicles or even individual components such as the engines, go through production lines with a very high degree of automation. If production stops here, it quickly leads to expensive losses. Therefore, it is important for vehicle manufacturers and suppliers to be able to rely on fail-safe components. An Austrian engine manufacturer therefore relies on "smart plastics" from igus. Sensors measure wear during operation and notify the user early enough to plan a repair or an exchange.
Requirements regarding energy supply systems in machine tool construction are high. Particularly in the workspace, they are exposed to harsh conditions. In this environment, the use of closed polymer energy tubes quickly pays off. They are resistant to temperature, withstand the omnipresent flying swarf and help avoid machine downtime. "We involve the majority of our suppliers at an early stage of our developments", states Mario Chemnitz, Head of Construction at Niles-Simmons Industrieanlagen GmbH from the city with the same name, Chemnitz.
Vibrations in machine tools components can lead to machines no longer working precisely, lowering the quality of workpieces and increasing wear of machine components. Energy chains, the "umbilical cord" of the modern machine tool, are a possible source of the problem. To improve their smooth running, innovative solutions are required ...
All products are checked in the igus test laboratory, the largest in the industry, under real-life conditions with regard to wear and durability. This enables the precise determination of the service life of the products.
Upon request, igus carries out customer tests so as to check the use of the products under completely individual conditions.
What systems does igus offer for the x-axis of the machine tool? Which energy chain can I use to save assembly time? You can find interesting contributions to questions regarding machine tools in the igus blog.
